Wolf-Garten WPCM-F Hand Push Cylinder Garden Lawn Mower – Mixed but does job

I spent quite a while searching for a hand mower for our garden. We did have an electric but we don’t have that much grass and a hand mower seemed more environmentally friendly and a lot less noisy. Handy when our three month old is sleeping upstairs and i need to mow the lawn. The mower is easy to put together with clear instructions and it’s pretty straightforward to adjust the cutting height. The grass collector is a little flimsy but in the plus side is light and easy enough to take off to empty. My only disappointment is that when ours arrived, the top section of the handle looked like a seconds part. It had chipped paint and looked distinctly shabby compared to the rest. I contacted wolf garten who passed me back to amazon. It has offered £15 as they’re are no spare handles but i’m quite disappointed as i chose the wolf garten for its quality and long lasting durability. I can envisage the handle rusting at the ends as the paint is already peeling off.

The instructions for the grass collecter were found severely inadequate. Not clear which rod goes where, and which way round. Seller had no better information. Shall have to contact the manufacturer wolf garten. The instructions for the mower itself allowed the various mower parts to be assembled ok, but there seemed to be a need for better information detail to get the cutter bladed properly aligned (so that the side wheels do properly drive the cutter.

The main body feels substantial and robust. When cutting it does so very efficiently and evenly. The handle seems a bit flimsy when you are assembling it but once in position it is fine. Overall, the mower is light and manoeuvrable. Adjusting the cutting height is reasonably simple as is adjusting the blade clearance. The only weak point is the grass collection bag. It is a wee bit fiddly to assemble and once you have managed it you may wonder why you bothered. It is flimsy and attaches to the handle via a velcro strap. Here are the specifications for the Wolf-Garten WPCM-F Hand Push Cylinder Garden Lawn Mower:

  • Cylinder blade cutting system made of 5 helix-carbon steel blades
  • Easy action cutting height adjustment 10 – 40mm
  • Front grass box capacity 15ltr
  • Rear width roller for stripes
  • Upswept handle style with soft top handle grips

Bought to replace my old petrol mower which conked out. Lawn is about 90 square metres and doesn’t take me any longer to cut than the petrol. Gives a good cut, much quieter. Slight niggle, the grass catcher is just adequate, would have preferred a more solid connection to the mower and less gap between the catcher and the blades. In hindsight a wider cylinder might have been even better, but generally am happy with this product.

Full set of instructions in english. Blade adjustment didn’t reach stated contactless level, but works fine with light contact.

Reviews from purchasers :

  • been searching for a robust successor to a much loved Qualcast Panther push mower which finally succumbed to rust
  • A cut above the rest!
  • Exceeded expectations

Having splashed some dosh on my very first (tiny) bit of turf i was anxious to maintain it properly and didn’t want an electric. Loved the look of this, the noddy colours, nice and small for my dinky garden, good reviews etc. However, i must have got a friday afternoon model as, once assembled, the bolts fell out of the frame as soon as it was used, the grass bin fell off all the time, all in all was very disappointing. I was dreading the replacement process but have to say amazon made it so easy, no quibble, courier collected from my front door, refund was made immediately. I then ordered the same model, back in stock, from oregon and this time everything is fine, although i have to say the hand grip at the top of the frame is a bit ‘wonky’ tho’ this doesn’t affect using it (i assume because it is assembled in uk). But bolts stay put, as does grass bin, and it mows a treat – and is a treat i now enjoy very much.

Easy to put together and to alter depth of blades. Took me minutes to assemble.

Great cut from the cylinders, which is let down by the poor grass box. It’s ‘actual’ working capacity means you’ll be emptying it more often than not making the whole experience a little frustrating. I’m comparing it with a qualcast panther i used to have and to be honest i’m looking forward to getting rid of it when the opportunity presents itself. Pros:-lightweight-good cutcons:-roller barely stripes-awful grass collector-flimsy handle (i’ve had to replace 3 bolts and nuts, which worked loose)overall, i’ll be getting a new mower next year. To be fair if you’ve got a small lawn like a snooker table with no obstructions or constraints at all then perhaps it’s for you.

Bought this because thought it would give a closer cut than my rotary petrol hayter however both at the lowest cut setting no real difference. Also how can they design a collection box. Cheap and totally ineffective. Also instructions nearly as bad.

Makes me wonder why bother with big mowers with an engine. The grass collector is a bit of a waste of time though, it catches very little.

Went for a hand mower this time as the hover is about to give up, its been years since i have used one of these. The lawn has had two cuts since i bought this and for the price i cant complain, cuts very well although you have to run up and down a couple of times, but this is less hassle than the hover and i get a lower trim with this. Although the basket is flimsy, it does collect the grass cuttings but because of the way it scoots along it can shoot trimmings up back on to the machine, the basket has came off but that was down to me, no real problem though. Overall easy to assemble and adjust, a joy to use.

Having worn out a bosch/qualcast push cylinder mower, i thought i’d try one of these. All i can say is, don’t let your grass get too long between cuts because it can’t copethe bosch is bigger too. Shall be selling and getting the bosch.

Bought this to use on my modest front lawn. It copes with fairly long grass better than i’d expected and does a decent job of cutting. The grass collection is ok, but i’d rather let the cuttings lie and feed back into my lawn. Build quality feels good, metal body and blades seem very robust. Assembly was easy, required a bit of brute strength to get the handle on. Only slight issue is changing the cutting height is a bit of a faff. All in all it’s a great purchase.

Good construction, but the muscle neded to fit the handles over the location pins tough for an old chap. Still not figured out how to fit the collection box, which is rather flimsy, compared to the working parts. Ideal for a sharp cylinder cut after my rotary mower has flattened /cut grass.

Nice mower, easy to push thanks to good gearing. One issue i have with it is that the mower could benefit from locking nuts for assembly. I’ve already lost one form it, i can only think it’s to do with vibration and movement as they were all tightened sufficiently. Apart from that it’s great value.

Even though the reviews were good, i was still dubious about this purchase. However – it is a fantastic little mower, and easier to use than you’d expect, thanks to the clever blade design. What’s more, it is really easy to start, uses no fuel, and is the best mower for the environmentyou might need a helping hand when you assemble it, but once it’s put together off you go.

Fabulous lawn mower – finally getting grass clippings rather than chopped mulch. Great for a small lawn where a cable is more bother than it’s worth.

I am so impressed by this mower that i have just bought a second one. I live in a town house and now have one for the small back garden and one for the front, to replace a flymo that’s given up. I find it easy to push, copes well with longer grass and achieves excellent results. Because it doesn’t need to be plugged in and it’s quite light, i use it at least twice a week. The grass box is not so good, which is why i’ve given it 4 stars rather than 5. However, i wouldn’t hesitate to buy another or to recommend it.

– assembly instructions were poor as in there are a few different size bolts and no indication as to where to use them. – build quality is good apart from grass collector basket which is too flimsy and slightly fiddly to use. – adjusting the cutting height is annoying, again poor instructions. – use is good though grass does tend to get wrapped round the blade spindle. – would i recommend to buy – it’s okay but better than other push mowers i’ve seen.

It does the job, even on overgrown lawns that were pretty wet. Minor complaints are that the grass catcher does sometimes fall off where you have bumpy spots on the lawn, and putting it together requires some creative interpretation of the instructions, heavy duty safety gloves and quite a lot of brute strength. Once you’re over that hurdle though, you’ll be well pleased with the results. A great budget option for small/medium sized lawns.

This is the only push mower i have ever used so i might have been expecting to much. The other reviews that complained about the screws in the handle always coming loose were right. My grass is not long put its fairly rough and it takes a lot of effort to cut the grass. With a lot of effort the mower cuts ok but it really wouldn’t work for longish grass.

Sold it on as kept coming apart, screws kept losening no matter how much you tightened them.

I have been searching for a robust successor to a much loved qualcast panther push mower which finally succumbed to rust after many years of use. The wolf-garten 30cm mower i ordered last month is not the one pictured on this item now although it is listed under my orders. Perhaps i had a newer/ older model mmmm anyway as you will see from the photos with this review the one that i received has a straight handle with a nice padded grip, a plastic front collecting grass box, easy peg adjustment system for the height of the blades and was described as having steel drive gears and this latter point was the reason i bought it, having had a mower with plastic drive gears before, which did not lasted beyond a year without skipping and skidding despite being a ‘best seller’i am very pleased with my wolf-garten 30cm mower. The handle was easy to assemble, it does not take a mammoth effort to push, the wheels grip the ground well and the blades give a lovely even cut. The steel drive gears give it a sturdy feel and it copes admirably with my lawn. If the picture on this item had corresponded to the mower i ordered last month i would have given it 5 stars.

The mower bit of this is ok, but the handle is a flimsy bit of nonsense. It’s constructed of several short pieces of tube and is further weakened by having a hole drilled through it at the point where the arms cross. So the handle will inevitably bend and shear at this point.

Does the job well, and looks great. I was pretty frustrated during assembly as instructions unclear and quite a few issues putting it together.

    1. Although machine appears reasonably well made, the major issue appears to be that the blades simply don’t spin fast enough (walking faster helps, but then you are also moving over the ground more quickly). It does ‘cut’ the grass to a degree, but it also just ‘bashes’ some of it down and misses some altogether. The grass collector is barely above the quality of a toy. Overall, think one should get more for the price. On the plus side it’s very light, manoeuvrable and easy to push, so if just wanted a rough cut and don’t mind a few blades of grass here and there, it might work for you.

  9. I bought this mower at the beginning of february, so i had it for a few weeks before needing to use it. I got it to replace a large flymo which we needed for a big lawn at our previous address, but which i found too troublesome to manoeuvre on our, now, two much smaller lawns. Its as sharp as a razor, easy to put together, i used the picture on amazon as a guide. I haven’t bothered to put the grass collector together as i don’t intend to use it, so i can’t comment on how good or otherwise that is. But if you want a mower for a reasonably small lawn, this is a great machine to get. I can get it out of the shed and have the lawns cut within minutes and it makes no noise other than a quiet clicking sound. I have to get the strimmer out after every two or three cuts to trim the edges, but otherwise that’s it. I’ve gradually lowered the blades to the last but one hole and the grass, even at this early stage of spring, looks so tidy. I found a bit of silicone grease useful to put on the threads of the bolts when i lowered the blades, and it looks as if this solid machine will giveme years of use.

    1. Excellent little mower, it works a treat. It might be a bit tedious if you have a large lawn to cut, but if you’ve got a pocket-handkerchief sized bit of grass this really does the job well.

Instructions could have been better, i worked out how to put the handle all together. This machine is for light cutting only. I had rather long grass and it was very hard work. The thing kept on bouncing around and the screws kept falling off, missing tufts of grass everywhere. I had to go to b&q to get more screws. Should have come with spares or at least ones that were not liable to fall off. The basket was a waste of time and kept falling off. The good news is that is is very good for small areas and is easy to manoeuvre and carry around.

      1. Use this down at the allotment to trip a tiny lawn. It cut nicely and is light to handle. I agree with others who have commented on the grass collection ‘box’ its fairly simple to fit but at the same time a pain, and i can’t see the velcro fastening lastin that long. A solid box would be much better. Thjis is the reason it is only getting 4 stars. The cutting blades are not very wide, quite enough for my diddy patch but would be a hard work on a larger patch. Also the roller doesn’t do much. Altogether reasonable value for money. Just have to see if it lasts.

    1. I hadn’t even started using this mower before it was breaking and falling apart. The screws and assembly for the catcher were stripped when i received it, and kept falling out while i was using the mower, now lost in the garden with no way to use the catcher. This is probably a good thing as the design of the blades is such that the grass barely lands in the catcher properly and only ends up collecting so close to the cutting edge that it jams up after pushing through about 2m of grass. It worked a lot better once i removed the catcher, but i don’t expect it will continue. It was also advertised as “folding” which is a lie, nothing about this mower folds, there is a mild pivot where the handle connects to the mower body, but it does little to help with reducing the space necessary to store the mower. I thought i would get what i paid for as this was not the absolute bargain basement option, but i should have shot lower.

Wow take no notice of any negative reviews about this product, i was totally blown away it purse with quality and not just the build quality but it’s actual performance of cutting grass it has made it a total pleasure to do in fact i’m looking forward to the next cut,l am a gardener by profession and i know my tools and this product can easily compete with the best of them, personally i feel what makes the difference apart from build quality of a engineered german product is the weight of the cutter wich is approx 16kg were other similar products weigh in at 7kg what this means is no more pushing backwards and forwards just walk with a nice steady speed and pressure and it will be cutting like a knife through butter,l don’t normally write reviews but this is well deserving and l just want to help those whom maybe slightly undecided, basically just buy it and enjoy with no regrets, before i go just like to add don’t be concerned of those whom have complained of a bad build manual it really isn’t it took me 5 minutes to build just remember you have a selection of bolts in order to assemble the handle ,in all 7 bolts 1 large for the centre assembly 4 medium for bottom and 2 for top,its child’s play just make sure you tighten well.

      1. The mower itself is very good, in that it cuts well and it’s light. The mower rides over even a bumpy and rather neglected country lawn with relative ease. However – and this is a big however – the handle is very poor. Wolf-garten have chosen to make it in several parts, presumably for ease of packaging, but the bolts they include to fix the handle together are completely inadequate. I hadn’t finished even one section of the lawn before every single bolt had come loose, and i then spent the majority of the rest of my mowing time tightening bolts, refixing bolts, searching for nuts and bolts and, finally, replacing them with others i had. Finally, at the weekend when i had transport, i was reduced to making a special trip to a hardware store and spending time (and a not inconsiderable amount of extra money) purchasing proper fixings for the mower’s handle. If you are going to buy this mower then you will have to replace the bolts wolf-garten supplies (and so spend extra over and above the price of the mower). This is not necessarily a deal breaker but it’s a very poor show, particularly from a company which boasts “for more than half a century, wolf garten has been working towards one important aim; to provide gardening tools and machinery of premium quality and performance that help make gardening easier and more enjoyable”. What you will need to secure the parts of the mower’s handle properly are bolts of the proper length plus ‘shake washers’ (who knew?) and nuts with nylon inside the thread. Maybe, if you have beautifully smooth and even lawns which are already manicured to within an inch of their lives and you mow at a sedate and stately pace, you don’t need any of this.

I love the idea of these, no power required, quiet, no lead. But it’s incredibly frustrating to use. Firstly the smallest twig of tuft of grass causes it to jam, and you have to roll the blades back with your foot. Secondly you have to empty the grass often and it fiddly as you have to unclipped the hopper. Thirdly the collector started to fall apart with very little use. Shame, i’m sure manual mowers used to be better this. I guess the item is cheap, but i am bored of taking things to he dump.
