I spent quite a while searching for a hand mower for our garden. We did have an electric but we don’t have that much grass and a hand mower seemed more environmentally friendly and a lot less noisy. Handy when our three month old is sleeping upstairs and i need to mow the lawn. The mower is easy to put together with clear instructions and it’s pretty straightforward to adjust the cutting height. The grass collector is a little flimsy but in the plus side is light and easy enough to take off to empty. My only disappointment is that when ours arrived, the top section of the handle looked like a seconds part. It had chipped paint and looked distinctly shabby compared to the rest. I contacted wolf garten who passed me back to amazon. It has offered £15 as they’re are no spare handles but i’m quite disappointed as i chose the wolf garten for its quality and long lasting durability. I can envisage the handle rusting at the ends as the paint is already peeling off.
The instructions for the grass collecter were found severely inadequate. Not clear which rod goes where, and which way round. Seller had no better information. Shall have to contact the manufacturer wolf garten. The instructions for the mower itself allowed the various mower parts to be assembled ok, but there seemed to be a need for better information detail to get the cutter bladed properly aligned (so that the side wheels do properly drive the cutter.
The main body feels substantial and robust. When cutting it does so very efficiently and evenly. The handle seems a bit flimsy when you are assembling it but once in position it is fine. Overall, the mower is light and manoeuvrable. Adjusting the cutting height is reasonably simple as is adjusting the blade clearance. The only weak point is the grass collection bag. It is a wee bit fiddly to assemble and once you have managed it you may wonder why you bothered. It is flimsy and attaches to the handle via a velcro strap. Here are the specifications for the Wolf-Garten WPCM-F Hand Push Cylinder Garden Lawn Mower:
- Cylinder blade cutting system made of 5 helix-carbon steel blades
- Easy action cutting height adjustment 10 – 40mm
- Front grass box capacity 15ltr
- Rear width roller for stripes
- Upswept handle style with soft top handle grips
Bought to replace my old petrol mower which conked out. Lawn is about 90 square metres and doesn’t take me any longer to cut than the petrol. Gives a good cut, much quieter. Slight niggle, the grass catcher is just adequate, would have preferred a more solid connection to the mower and less gap between the catcher and the blades. In hindsight a wider cylinder might have been even better, but generally am happy with this product.
Full set of instructions in english. Blade adjustment didn’t reach stated contactless level, but works fine with light contact.
Reviews from purchasers :
- been searching for a robust successor to a much loved Qualcast Panther push mower which finally succumbed to rust
- A cut above the rest!
- Exceeded expectations
Having splashed some dosh on my very first (tiny) bit of turf i was anxious to maintain it properly and didn’t want an electric. Loved the look of this, the noddy colours, nice and small for my dinky garden, good reviews etc. However, i must have got a friday afternoon model as, once assembled, the bolts fell out of the frame as soon as it was used, the grass bin fell off all the time, all in all was very disappointing. I was dreading the replacement process but have to say amazon made it so easy, no quibble, courier collected from my front door, refund was made immediately. I then ordered the same model, back in stock, from oregon and this time everything is fine, although i have to say the hand grip at the top of the frame is a bit ‘wonky’ tho’ this doesn’t affect using it (i assume because it is assembled in uk). But bolts stay put, as does grass bin, and it mows a treat – and is a treat i now enjoy very much.
Easy to put together and to alter depth of blades. Took me minutes to assemble.
Great cut from the cylinders, which is let down by the poor grass box. It’s ‘actual’ working capacity means you’ll be emptying it more often than not making the whole experience a little frustrating. I’m comparing it with a qualcast panther i used to have and to be honest i’m looking forward to getting rid of it when the opportunity presents itself. Pros:-lightweight-good cutcons:-roller barely stripes-awful grass collector-flimsy handle (i’ve had to replace 3 bolts and nuts, which worked loose)overall, i’ll be getting a new mower next year. To be fair if you’ve got a small lawn like a snooker table with no obstructions or constraints at all then perhaps it’s for you.
Bought this because thought it would give a closer cut than my rotary petrol hayter however both at the lowest cut setting no real difference. Also how can they design a collection box. Cheap and totally ineffective. Also instructions nearly as bad.
Makes me wonder why bother with big mowers with an engine. The grass collector is a bit of a waste of time though, it catches very little.
Went for a hand mower this time as the hover is about to give up, its been years since i have used one of these. The lawn has had two cuts since i bought this and for the price i cant complain, cuts very well although you have to run up and down a couple of times, but this is less hassle than the hover and i get a lower trim with this. Although the basket is flimsy, it does collect the grass cuttings but because of the way it scoots along it can shoot trimmings up back on to the machine, the basket has came off but that was down to me, no real problem though. Overall easy to assemble and adjust, a joy to use.
Having worn out a bosch/qualcast push cylinder mower, i thought i’d try one of these. All i can say is, don’t let your grass get too long between cuts because it can’t copethe bosch is bigger too. Shall be selling and getting the bosch.
Bought this to use on my modest front lawn. It copes with fairly long grass better than i’d expected and does a decent job of cutting. The grass collection is ok, but i’d rather let the cuttings lie and feed back into my lawn. Build quality feels good, metal body and blades seem very robust. Assembly was easy, required a bit of brute strength to get the handle on. Only slight issue is changing the cutting height is a bit of a faff. All in all it’s a great purchase.
Good construction, but the muscle neded to fit the handles over the location pins tough for an old chap. Still not figured out how to fit the collection box, which is rather flimsy, compared to the working parts. Ideal for a sharp cylinder cut after my rotary mower has flattened /cut grass.
Nice mower, easy to push thanks to good gearing. One issue i have with it is that the mower could benefit from locking nuts for assembly. I’ve already lost one form it, i can only think it’s to do with vibration and movement as they were all tightened sufficiently. Apart from that it’s great value.
Even though the reviews were good, i was still dubious about this purchase. However – it is a fantastic little mower, and easier to use than you’d expect, thanks to the clever blade design. What’s more, it is really easy to start, uses no fuel, and is the best mower for the environmentyou might need a helping hand when you assemble it, but once it’s put together off you go.
Fabulous lawn mower – finally getting grass clippings rather than chopped mulch. Great for a small lawn where a cable is more bother than it’s worth.
I am so impressed by this mower that i have just bought a second one. I live in a town house and now have one for the small back garden and one for the front, to replace a flymo that’s given up. I find it easy to push, copes well with longer grass and achieves excellent results. Because it doesn’t need to be plugged in and it’s quite light, i use it at least twice a week. The grass box is not so good, which is why i’ve given it 4 stars rather than 5. However, i wouldn’t hesitate to buy another or to recommend it.
– assembly instructions were poor as in there are a few different size bolts and no indication as to where to use them. – build quality is good apart from grass collector basket which is too flimsy and slightly fiddly to use. – adjusting the cutting height is annoying, again poor instructions. – use is good though grass does tend to get wrapped round the blade spindle. – would i recommend to buy – it’s okay but better than other push mowers i’ve seen.
It does the job, even on overgrown lawns that were pretty wet. Minor complaints are that the grass catcher does sometimes fall off where you have bumpy spots on the lawn, and putting it together requires some creative interpretation of the instructions, heavy duty safety gloves and quite a lot of brute strength. Once you’re over that hurdle though, you’ll be well pleased with the results. A great budget option for small/medium sized lawns.
This is the only push mower i have ever used so i might have been expecting to much. The other reviews that complained about the screws in the handle always coming loose were right. My grass is not long put its fairly rough and it takes a lot of effort to cut the grass. With a lot of effort the mower cuts ok but it really wouldn’t work for longish grass.
