Silverline 263572 Soldering Iron 40 W : but I got it overall good.

The guard on this item is too small. I badly burned two of my fingers when they slipped onto the hot part of the iron. My previouse soldering iron had a much larger guard and in 15 years of use i did not receive one burn.

Had two of these for a group workshop; they work reasonably well but the tip isn’t the best in the world and they don’t heat up very well/evenly. They would do for basic work or the occasional hobbyist but won’t stand up to extended use.

As a railway modeller i needed an iron which would suit my requirements, reasonably quick heat-up,relatively fine business end and a lead that lacks a mind of it’s own. At the price,it certainly fills the bill.

Good for the larger auto mobile wires that my 25 watt will not handle, nice stand.

  • Good Value For Money
  • very good with small amounts of solder in a closed space
  • Not bad price at all

Silverline 263572 Soldering Iron 40 W

  • For general purpose soldering
  • Ideal for soldering of circuits, medium-thick wires and cables
  • Temperature range 420 – 480 degree celsius
  • Includes precision point tip
  • Certified to BS EN 60335-2-45

I didn’t need this for soldering but for small craft projects. The fine tip is excellent for this and helps me to do fine accurate lines. I have no intention of soldering with it so could not comment on its use as a soldering tool.

Great item did what i wanted it for so very pleased.

Does what it needs too, very good with small amounts of solder in a closed space, good buy.

Extremely good little soldering iron for those little jobs. Easy to use, good price and quick delivery. I would highly recommned this soldering iron.

Despite some poor ratings, i have found this product works satisfactorily. The product feels comfortable in the hand – it heats up quickly and does what it’s supposed to. I have had problems though with the silverline 10-piece bit set bought at the same time. These bits do not fit into the soldering iron without reducing the shaft diameter a few millimetres, something potential purchasers might like to consider before buying. Maybe i will review these comments in a month or two after which time the soldering iron will have been well used.

Great as always ,silver line works well and a three yr guarantee.

I bought it to do some school work at home. It does the job, you pay for what you get.

I’ve only used it once and it works ok. I bought it to use at home and i believe for occasional use its not bad at all.

Bit late coming , but i got it overall good.

A good item i bought two i liked them so much good quick heat up time a good buy.

I brought this item purely for art purposes. It works well and gets heated quickly and sufficiently for what i need it for. Its okay if you need it for very basic things. Only thing that disappointed me was the length of the cable as it is very short.

Not bad price at all, and it actually worked, when i soldered something for the first time since metalwork at school. I managed to fix an appliance. However, there was no solder sponge in the pack, so some solder got stuck to the tip. I recommend using something to clamp the item you want to solder, as it’s hard holding solder, the iron, and the item you’re soldering.

I have a number of soldering irons of diverse fuels and measurements. This is a useful minimal iron far more than able of managing ordinary domestic careers.

Receives warm in very good time and has a precise ample suggestion for fix it positions. Plug and cable are strong and well designed.

Operates high-quality and delivered ahead of anticipated date.

I am incredibly delighted with the product, which is specifically as advertised. It arrived effectively just before the estimated shipping and delivery time and was perfectly packaged.

I’ve bought this soldering iron plenty of times before (from a different site) and it works fairly well, could be using it for a up to a month or over without any hitches, the tip still intact. However i bought this a couple of days ago from here (mostly because prime reduces the waiting time) and the moment i plugged it in, the tip oxidised, the tin coating on the tip completely gone in under five minutes of being on. What i should have done is tin the tip prior to using it. All you have to do is get a tip tinning compound (should be in power form) and wipe your hot soldering tip into the compound to get a new shinny tin layer. Maybe do it two or three times. That should help stop the tip from oxidising right off the bat.

Worked well for a couple of weeks and then stopped working entirely despite not having been moved since the last time it was used.

I bought this soldering iron for occasional and infrequent use. I used it once and it was satisfactory. The second time i went to use it, it didnt get hot at all and is useless (i have checked the fuse). So, only used it once in about 18 months and by the time i needed it again it was out of warranty. I contacted silverline and they replaced the item, even though it was out of warranty – fair play.

I purchased one of these a year or so ago and it worked well, then simply gave up the ghost. Can’t really complain as the price reflected the quality. I bought a second one expecting a similar performance. It arrived two days ago and during my second switch on after 10 minutes it started losing head oxidising over and becoming useless. It would seem that buying this iron will be a bit of a gamble and considering the choice out there, i won’t risk it. Unfortunately i cut the cable to insert an in-line switch as i did before so i can’t really reurn it. 2 stars because of the first one only, otherwise none (if poss) would have been my rating.

      1. Used it once, unplugged it to let it cool, ten minutes later ready to solder again, wouldn’t work.

Not bad, just fiond the design clunky for fine work, you need to be able to hold the tool nearer the nib but its too hot as the handle doesn’t cover down the metal enough so you cant.

      1. Over the past couple of years, i have owned irons from the likes of weller, antex, maplin and rs. One time i needed an iron in a short space of time so i purchased this iron from toolstation. I must inform you that this is the worst soldering iron i have ever purchased in my lifethe first time i operated the iron, there was a burning smell of plastic that came off it, not a good sign at all. The second time i used it for a basic soldering joint, the tip oxidised in 5 minutes and the tip was rendered useless. Even if you rarely use a soldering iron, do not rationalise the purchase of a cheap iron like this one (unlike some of the people who have reviewed this iron previously) as you will have less problems with them, they will last longer, they will give better soldering work and they will be considerably safer. Would you cheap out on a doorlock with the rationalisation that “you only open the door every now and again”?save yourself the trouble and invest in a £45 weller.

    1. I have had the soldering iron for a couple of months and noticed that it seemed to become very hot. In total i have used it three times with 20 minutes of work and the element has now blown out. Even for the price value i would expect the iron to last more than an hour of total use. I would say from the reviews that you may have a 50/50 chance of receiving a good or terrible product.

  12. Was fine for the approx 3 hours total use then the element burnt out. The best thing i can say was that it didn’t trip the house electrics when it died.

      1. Now able to do a more exact soldering due to the power 40w iron as now i need only place the tip to the joint and flow the solder quickly. Neat work is my standard now.

Returned the first one as it failed to heat up after 20 minutes use. The replacement works ok but this is not a top quality product and i wouldn’t recommend it.

First iron stopped getting warm after a couple of uses. Even though it was well outside the 30 days return window it was no problem to have amazon send out a replacement free of charge after a quick chat. Let’s hope the second one holds up better. It’s not the best gun i ever used but, when it works, it has been good enough for the quick fixes i’ve needed it for.
