Makita BHP456RFWX 2-Speed 18V Li-ion Combi Drill – Brilliant

Proper tools nice case: quality.

Just brilliantthis was a big upgrade from my old cheapo light diy model and being an amateur diy hobbyst, i had no idea what a proper drill like this can do until i tried it. I find it easy to use, powerful but precise and the impact driver is perfect for drilling into bricks (which i almost couldn’t do at all with the old one). Also, battery charges quickly and lasts long. It also seems to be user-serviceable with parts available to purchase separately. The only small complaint is that i would’ve appreciated one more led light at the bottom of the grip (close to where the battery detach button goes), pointing up towards the drilling point – that would complement the existing led light that points towards the drillbit but is always obscured by the drill chuck.

Top quality gear, whether you are diying or in the trade. The case isn’t as good as the blue plastic makita ones, but it’s ok. Here are the specifications for the Makita BHP456RFWX 2-Speed 18V Li-ion Combi Drill:

  • 4 pole motor
  • Conveniently located push button for forward and reverse
  • High comfort grips, ergonomically designed
  • 2 speed metal gearbox
  • Forward/reverse rotation

Very pleased with the drill stacks of torque – much better than the worx drill it replaced (heavy diy use) the battery and charger are excellent, the battery lasts hours in normal use and recharges in about 1-1. I did buy a second oem battery not makita that failed after a few months of very light use, i wont make the same mistake again i will get a makita battery.

Slight second but didn’t bother me as it only was slight damage to the case. The delivery service was excellent too.

Reviews from purchasers :

  • Worth it. Great product.
  • Once you’ve bought this, you can throw all your other toy drills away!
  • Excellent quality for a long-lasting tool

Based on the quality of this item, i’ve decided to go with the makita line of tools for future items. I think a high-quality item in an essential too like a drill is a sensible decision – something that is built to last and will provide accurate use over many years. The mechanism is easy to use; the direction can be reversed with the push of a button. The speed can be adjusted with a turn and the modes as well (hammer / drill / screw). The battery lasts for ages before needing a re-charge. I got the model with the hard case and i must say it’s nice to have it well protected. My only (minor) gripe with the drill is the placement of the led light – it sits just under the chuck and thus it throws a shadow right onto the drillbit and area that you’re drilling into. This is not a major issue (where else could the light possibly go?), but it’s worth noting anyway.

This drill is way too good for me, i have trouble finding reasons to drill holes. It looks the dogs nuts, especially with its flash metal briefcase. It is very light and much smaller than the drills i remember as a child. I often get nostalgic when thinking of drills of days gone by.

Bought this to complete my tool set tht i use for mechaning. The drill works perfectly and charges so fast that if it does half way through a job you don’t have to wait long to start again.

Just a good tool to work with it was a pleasant suprises my old drill was on on its last legs.

I am a joiner to trade and have had many dewalt battery drills. On a comparison with a top of the range dewalt i would give it 9/10 all round but it costs half is much so imo is a really good buy.

This is a superb bit of kit, the battery goes on and on, and when it does run out just have a coffee break (22. 5 minutes) while it recharges. Absolutely no need to get a second battery – unless of course you don’t intend stopping for a break. Totally recommend this product.

It has fulfilled its first job perfectly. It is true that the case seems to be the weak point and of course, don’t forget that drill and screw driver bits aren’t included.

This drill/driver is a superb piece of equipment. It is well balanced, robust, recharges very quickly and comes in a very professional case. Its not cheap but you are getting what you are paying for.

Quick charge, battery lasts all day. Would recommend to any trade or diyerled light is obstructed by the chuck a little but no biggie. Just a shame i dropped mine into the humber estuary ten minutes into some anode and cathode work on grimsby docks;-).

I’ve bought other makes before and now wish i’d bought makita in the first place judging by this model. Very fast charging and a powerful drill for it’s size.

Quality item powerful and with the case it’s a superb bit of kit.

My husband has had the forerunner bhp452 for several years and has been fully tried and testedthis is for my son who has been jealous for so long and will stop borrowing ours.

This is a great drill – very well built and a very comfortable size, making it a joy to use. Battery charges very quickly and lasts for ages. The amount of torque this produces is scary – no way could you get that much power into a screw by handthe case looks very smart, but is perhaps a bit cheap. Fine for keeping in my cupboards in the house, but probably not sturdy enough for use on site. The internal foam fittings are great and hold the drill and charger very snugly. (edit – dec2013 – now i’ve used this drill for a few months the case has proven to be much more sturdy than i first thought. )£140 might seem a bit steep for a drill, but believe me this is worth every penny.

Bought this to do all those little jobs needed on a new home and it is far far more. Excellent tool for everyone from a diy to a builder.

Great drill, lasts ages, strong and powerful. The chargers are massive but it takes only an hour to charge fully. As someone has said before the light doesn’t shine where it is useful, but hey its a good drill.

My philosphy with tools is to buy cheap, and only if they cause trouble/break/i get a lot of use out of them to pay more. After going through some cheap battery drills, i’m glad i paid more. This thing has seen me through a lot, it’s lived in a dusy wet garage mosty, drilled for hours through 4mm steel (i’ve since got a drill press. ), spent hours drilling down roof screws through steel roofing into wood, during which there was quite a storm and it spent at least a day or so outside in the brunt of it. It’s mixed mortar for hours, i’ve used it to buff, strip using wire-wheels, drill through car chassis. I’ve snapped bits, heated bits red-hot, chipped bits, and this drill soldiers on. The build quality is amazing, it’s not got a hint of rust, the sturdy plastic could do with a wash but is otherwise unblemished. I’ve dropped it off a roof, knocked it, slipped and slammed it into things, never had any problems. The charger is great, even though i have a second battery i don’t really need it.

Great drill but cheaper elsewhere. I got the newer more powerful battery rmwx for only £140a bit more hardcore for mere jobs around the house but should mean i have no issues and it should last many years. Great case but easily scratches the corners and i got a slight dent just carrying home.

    1. Fantastic drill, use it constantly. Family who are in the building trade envy it. Highly recommended and worth the money. 20 mins from empty to full, haven’t had a need for a second battery. If i’m in the middle of something i’ll just make a cup of tea and get back to it afterwards.

    1. If you an occasional diyer then this is hands down the best drill you will ever own. I used this last year to create a stud partition in my garage, which consisted of securing approximately 30 pieces of timber. The ease of changing settings and effectiveness of the drill is simply outstanding; able to comfortably drill holes in breeze block, brick (in hammer mode), pilot holes in wood and screwing. Throughout the task, i can only recall having to charge it twice (bearing in mind it was being used from new, so the battery probably hasn’t hit maximum usefulness yet). Charging was a breeze with the fast 20 min charger, so there is not a lot of waiting time or painstaking overnight charging with the old ni-cd drills. Before this, i only had a cheapy wickes branded cordless drill and as you might expect, this is a million times better. I would say if there is one good tool you want in your toolbox, then a drill has to be up there. It really is worth paying that bit extra and getting a tool that will last for many years, such as this one. One piece of advice is to register for the extended warranty when you buy this as makita will then cover it for 3 years instead of the usual 1 year. I think you need to do this within 30 days of purchasing, so don’t forget to do that.

For even occasional use this is the one to buy. Strong, powerful and beautifully made it never ceases to amaze me how this drill manages all that my mains powered electric drill can do. Great product, great brand and for me is the clear leader in this category. Have just given one to my son as a birthday present and he is also delighted.
