Joint Genie Professional 8mm Dowelling tool, A bit expensive but worth the money

Fantastic tool for woodworking hobbyists. Very well made, and very accurate. Built an organiser for my wardrobe, and it all went together perfectly using this tool and some wood glue.

I bought this item more in hope than expectation as gadgets never seem to work as well as the adverts say. However on this occasion i was wrong. It is very well engineered and built and it enables you to join wood with dowels in a totally reliable way. The principle upon which it is built is the idea of indexing additional dowels by reference to an earlier one. This seems such a simple idea yet it enables total accuracy when drilling the holes and fitting wood together using dowels. I basically got my money’s worth on my first project which was a small cupboard to fit into a customised space. I used non-standard depth wood and the built in spacing system handled this with ease. Highly recommended if you want to use dowels in a wood working project in my opinion.

Excellent tool, beautifully accurate and simple to operate.

I can’t do justice to this product in a quick review. Suffice to say it more than halved my time to build a toy for my son, eliminated rework and produced an excellent finish. For an amateur like me, it’s invaluable.

This is a really clever and easy to use jig that gives perfect results with minimal input from the user. It’s well made and although i agree with another reviewer that it ought to have brass knobs, it’s not a major issue for me. It’s not cheap but you’re not paying just for the physical product, you’re also paying for the inventor’s clever idea. And because it works so well, avoiding the usual faffing about and many mistakes, for me, it’s money well spent. Before i’d seen joint genie, i had made up a jig out of my ancient childhood mechano, so maybe i was on the right track to becoming a millionaire.

This is an excellent product that makes dowelling easy and accurate. When checking out this product on the joint genie (jg)website i discovered that the knurled knobs have now been changed and are made from a plastic material. This works fine and does the job perfectly. I decided to purchase this kit from amazon as it worked out cheaper, even though it is supplied by jg themselves. This is where you find out why it is cheaper. Instead of being supplied with the brass drill stop that is supplied with the kit from the jg website, instead the drill stop that is supplied is the usual steel ring found on most cheap drill kits. This ring being so thin it does not seat correctly when the grub screw is tightened up. Also as this is hardened steel you end up with hardened steel rubbing against hardened steel when you bottom the drill. I did query this with jg and was basically told it was my fault for ordering from amazon in order to save a few pounds. Ok, so i saved some money, that’s human nature, but jg should at least tell people in their description that they won’t be getting the same kit as on their own website.

Great little tooldoes just what it should do. Make sure the dowels you buy are good tight fit the ones i bought a bit slack.

My only minor gripe is that although left/right swap is easy – with only 1mm spacers you cannot set it to centre on an odd-number thickness board eg 13mm. When you swap left to right you end up with holes centred at 6mm & 7mm in this instance especially when you have holes at each end of the same piece. The trick is to work off the same faceboth top and bottom so the offset is constant (either 6mm or 7mm) – the fact that it is not dead-centre is acceptable with most boards. However, to achieve this you have to swap the end stop on the jig over each time : that is the pain. Another end-stop plate so that you can use either end as the datum would make this perfection for speed. You can do it – but it becomes a faff in a semi=production operation with lots of pieces to match up. And you have to keep your wits about you and ensure you mark your ‘face-sides’. Other than that minor quibble – it is a top quality piece of kit that does the job really well – worth the 70-odd quid.

Fantastic tool very accurate i wished that i could have had one years ago .

An excellent tool when used with due care and attention to the set-up. Can create a much longer row of dowel holes by using one dowel (or the shank of a spare drill) as an index pin to maintain accurate hole spacings along both mating faces. I have produced joints of 800mm length like that.

There is nothing worse in joinery than resorting to screw joints and having to apply stopper to all those unsightly screw head holes. Not only is the joint weak, but also likely to be inaccurate without careful marking out and clamping. This can be particularly difficult when panelling and carcassing – particularly the ‘t’ joint. The obvious solution is to use a loose tenon system or biscuit joint, the dowel being a solid example of the former. The difficulty here is still the marking out, and the need to drill perfectly centred holes exactly perpendicular to the workpeice. There are many jigs on the market to assist with this – not to mention a trusty drill press (difficult to transport to site or use up a ladder), but all seem to suffer with limitations, accurate clamping problems, the need to drill both componants simultaneously etc,. As a professional joiner and cabinet maker i can honestly say this jig really works. It is bomb proof, totally accurate, deals with differing stock easily and it is simple to use. It is so simple it hardly needs instructions, unless you are a complete novice, but even then it wont take you long to get round the need to mirror your holes exactly or the need to fix the jig firmly before drilling.

Does the job quickly and efficiently and a really well engineered kit. I should have purchased this first off.

A bit pricy for what it is, but i guess you pay for the idea. Saying that it appears very well made and hopefully will last well. Absolutely brill bit of kit. Saved loads of time when compared with the ‘traditional’ method of using studs.

Ce produit est formidable, facile à utiliser et surtout d’une rapidité pour effectuer le travail attendu. Je le recommande à tous les bricoleurs avertis.

Easy to use, very efficient. The system give us an accurate assembly tool i never seen before.
