Dremel Fotiflex 9100-21 Heavy Duty Flexible Shaft, Fortiflex Shaft

Item have a high build quality. Spindle speed can be controlled by pedal with high precision. Shame that they do not include a desk stand into kit. Must buy separately or make one. I using my camera’s tripod as a stand.

I am a professional woodcarver/sculptor by trade and am expanding and updating my workshop to meet the needs of myself and my students work. Whilst doing my research of flexishaft units i was very interested when i learned about the release of the new dremel fortiflex and read about its technical specifications and even more so when i read that it was the editors choice in the guild of master craftsmen publication ‘woodcarving’ magazine. The unit arrives with everything you need to get to work, the motor, heavy duty flexible shaft, keyed chuck hand piece, variable speed foot control, wall hook and a selection of small drill bits, sanding drums and burrs. The first impression of the unit was its sleek compact design and strong wide handle, aesthetically very pleasing to the eye and a robust looking build. Very nicethe setup was easy; simply offer the inner shaft up onto the spindle at the base of the motor and secure the little grub screw tightly onto it, then screw the outer shaft to the base of the unit, push the hand piece on, plug it in, switch it on, press the foot pedal and away you go. I have had my dremel fortiflex for 2 weeks now and have tested it thoroughly both on my own project; an abstract female figure, and with some of my students projects which vary from figures and animals to low and high relief carvings. I/we have been using a selection of rotary burrs:* 20mm typhoon burrs – roughing out, hollowing and piercing* various sized and shaped solid carbide double cut burrs – cleaning the hollowed areas from the typhoon burr, piercing, roughing out and detailing* diamond burrs – smoothing and finishingthe unit cut effortlessly and very smoothly through both lime and walnut and did not flinch or show any signs of resistance throughout its speed range and use. The power delivery of 300w is smooth and precise with high torque at low revs and the full 20,000rpm gives a very fine finish indeed and is more than enough for my uses as a professional carver/sculptor. One real bonus that i had not anticipated was how quickly the motor came to a complete standstill from full revs, this is particularly useful when needing to change burrs or hand pieces and is also a good safety feature. Another good feature for me is the fact that the shaft and hand pieces are a universal ‘push fit’, meaning that i can use all of my old foredom ones too.

Brilliant is all i need to say bout this product. . If your thinking bout buying it but think oh dear its expensive. . Just buy it you wont be sorry.

“Very satisfied with this product.
, Excellent for jewellery making
, Fortiflex Shaft

Plenty of power, speed very controllable. Wiring to foot pedal thick and difficult to manage. Required a post to hang up the motor. Instruction book is too simplistic and a list of the various attachments would be useful.

Use this all the time on hard wood. Much better than anything else dremel makes.

This an excellent, well made drill which is significantly more powerful than silat hand held drills. The only downside is the standard chuck which can be a little bit tricky to get at as it is shielded by the drill cover.

Massive powered rotary tool, slim handle makes using this so easy with ample power to carry out jobs.

It is perfect for what i wanted it for – using in jewellery making. All of my drill bits and burrs etc fit it and the foot pedal is really reactive when using. It also looks really smart and professional.

  1. But two units very poor and had to be returned with same fault after first operation, had to resort back to the 4000 model. I was very excited to try this model but have lost all confidence after my experiences using it.

I purchased one of these for work a few years ago, after the prior model became a necessary piece of equipment but the parts were becoming hard to find. It has been used only occasionally, as our other two older models are still in good working order. Unfortunately the inner lead of the flexible shaft has broken (a hazard of the work we do) but i have discovered that the parts are currently not available anywhere in the uk and haven’t been since february – with no word from dremel to uk suppliers as to when they will be available again. Also they have changed the way the parts are fitted so now the inner lead is no longer available to purchase separately from the outer flexible shaft, like they were with the previous model. So if this lead breaks it is now necessary to pay almost £40 for the entire flexible shaft. Not impressed that i now have a machine that could cost a lot to maintain in future and is currently utterly useless.
