Being gas operated this unit is completely portable. It is ideal for any jobs both inside or outside the house or in the car. No wires, cables or extensions to worry about. It gets up to operating temperature swiftly and runs for a respectable time on a fill of gas. Should also mention it comes in a very good quality container which keeps everything together. Am very pleased with the quality of this kit. It should last for many years.
Very, very pleased with the quality of this product. Only drawback for me was that it wasn’t supplied with the smallest tip and it was a bit tricky to use on the size of wire i had to solder.
Top quality iron heats up very fast and easily controlled output, full range of spares, tips etc available, and i understand they are made in ireland and not china. Feels like it could last many years. Here are the specifications for the COSTAR Portasol P-1K Professional Butane Gas Catalytic Soldering Iron Tool Kit:
- Flint ignition
- 60 minute run time
- Anti Static ESD Safe
- Ready to melt solder less than 30 seconds from ignition.
- flameless combustion (solder & hot air modes)
I bought one of these last year ago after thinking i had lost my original, and as luck would have it, found it just after the new one arrivedmy old iron is yellow in colour and still working after over 30 years of use, i have only changed the tip once. If the new iron lasts as long as the original, and i am sure it will, it will probably outlast me. The iron itself is easy to use, it heats up quickly and does everything i ask of it. You don’t need to look at any other make and i can highly recommend portosol irons.
Handy piece of kit, with the various bits supplied, only soldered as of yet, very happy for the diy enthusiasts.

- Seems great
Good kit i’m already using this about year and its worth money.
Have used the cheaper version before and liked it very much and this professional one exceeds my expectations as specially with its various heads.
Very basic and simple design. Having owned now 3 other gas soldering irons that have all expired, i can see how this may well out last these. Unlike my prior now dead irons, the gauze that is responsible to creating the intense heat required to solder and which after time fails leaveing the device un-lightable our not hot enough, is part of the replaceable tip on this iron. So when the gauze fails i simply change the tip. I purchased this iron as it looks like the a lot more expensive snap-on system.
I have done some research on the best iron to get. This was for a friend and when i gave it to him he was delighted and shocked that i had got him such a good iron.
I have had my portasol soldering iron/heat gun/blow torch/hot knife tool for many years. I used it professionally when there was no electrical outlet nearby. Used for general soldering, heat shrink and temporary plastic repair. I still use it at home after after more than 20 yrs of service. The other item which compares is the original weller curie effect iron.
